Full Review of the LG 306G from Tracfone

This review by TracfoneReviewer will cover the features, specs, likes and dislikes, and buying tips for the LG 306G.
LG 306G Review
Full Review of the LG 306G

Tracfone Wireless is a prepaid cell phone company providing low cost phones and minutes to customers throughout the US. They have a variety of phones, including Android smartphones (See our reviews of these phones on our Cell Phone Reviews page).

The LG 306G is a relatively new (2014) offering from Tracfone that features a touchscreen, WiFi, Triple Minutes for life and runs on GSM networks. (We will cover more about the GSM network further down).

It is similar to the very popular LG 840G, but a few years newer. Both phones use a non-Android OS and are a somewhat small size compared to other phones.

Let's take a look at the detailed features for the LG 306G.

LG 306G Features and Specs

This phone comes with all the standard features you expect from a non-Android phone.

  • WiFi Capability
  • GPS Connectivity
  • 5 Customizable Home Screens
  • 2MP Camera
  • Mobile Web with 3G Speeds
  • Text and Picture messaging
  • 4GB Micro SD Card (up to 32GB Compatible)
  • Bluetooth
  • MP3 Player
  • Gravity Sensor (tilt sensor)
  • 1000 Entry Phonebook
  • Handsfree speaker
  • Alarm Clock
  • Call Waiting, Caller ID, Voicemail, Voice Recorder
Specs and Dimensions
  • 3.2" Touchscreen
  • Size: 4.08" x 2.47" x 0.47" (inches)
  • Weight: 3.72 OZ
  • Battery: 3 Hours talk time, 17 days on Standby

The features and specs for the LG 306G are comparable to other Tracfone devices like the LG 530G, Samsung S390G or, as we mentioned already, the LG 840G.

The key features for this phone are GSM network, touchscreen, WiFi and Triple Minutes. Let's get into what we like, and don't like, about the LG 306G to break it down a little further.

LG 306G Review - Likes and Dislikes

Starting with what we Like:
LG 306G Review tracfone
Apps on the LG 306G

The LG 306G is similar to the LG 840G which was a very popular phone for Tracfone users. Thus, the LG 306G has many of these same great features.

WiFi access, 3G speed, and the 3.2" touchscreen are all very nice to have. The touchscreen is fairly bright and responsive. The phone also has 5 home screens which you can customize.

Battery life on the LG 306G is good, especially compared to smartphones. It should last a few days with moderate use, and even a week with light use (it is advertised to last 17 days on standby).

The phone comes with a 4GB Micro SD card which you can put music on, or use to store pictures etc. For those who want to put a lot of stuff on the phone, you can upgrade your SD card to up to 32GB.

We like that the LG 306G does not use the new '3 buckets' system for minutes, but rather the older option where you have minutes from one pool used for data, texting and calling. (If you would rather have separate pools for data, texts and calling, take a look at the Android smartphones.) This is the same way the LG 840G worked. Basically, if you do a lot of texting this is a better option for you. And this phone also comes with Triple Minutes for Life, so every time you add minutes they will be tripled.

The LG 306G uses the GSM network, probably running on AT&T cell phone service. All of the new Android smartphones use CDMA networks, which are Verizon towers. So if Verizon service isn't very good in your area, you should go with a GSM phone like the LG 306G (but make sure AT&T service is good in your area). To check, try asking your friends or neighbors, or enter your zip code on the Tracfone website. (for more on these networks, read our GSM vs CDMA Guide.)

Lastly, this phone will work with Tracfone Promo Codes! Unlike the Android smartphones Tracfone offers.

Now for a few dislikes.

LG 306G Dislikes
This phone is a pretty solid device that doesn't seem to have any big dislikes, but also doesn't really 'wow' in any areas either.

The lack of a main operating system like Android is a little disappointing. With Android OS you have access to thousands of apps. With the LG 306G, there are apps available, but not as many. We would recommend Opera Mini, which is a great app for browsing the internet.

The LG 306G isn't a new phone, even though it is new to Tracfone. So don't expect too much from it. There are a variety of quirks, such as the phone switching to landscape mode for texting, but if you don't mind things like this it is a good option.

The 2MP camera is not great, but that is to be expected for a phone like this.

If you find any problems with your LG 306G, let us know in the comments so we can mention them here.

Also, if you want more information, be sure to check out the full user guide linked below.

Overview and Buying Options for the LG 306G

Overall, the LG 306G is similar to the LG 840G, which isn't a bad thing, unless you are looking to upgrade from the LG 840G (in which case we would suggest a smartphone like the LG Optimus Dynamic II).
LG 306G tracfone review
LG 306G

The LG 306G is a simple, durable phone that will get the job done and won't be as bulky as most smartphones. It is a great choice for people who want something at a reasonable price, and don't need all the latest features. Overall, we like this phone. It isn't too fancy, but works well and has most of the features you would need for a cell phone.

For Tracfone customers, this is a pretty standard Tracfone device, and would make a good upgrade if you have an older phone, especially if you only have double minutes for life.

Where to find the LG 306G from Tracfone
You can find the LG 306G on the Tracfone website, currently selling for $50.

Dollar General among other stores is also selling this phone usually for a bit less.

There are sometimes some great bundles with this phone on HSN.com or ShopHQ.com.

We have also found the LG 306G on Amazon for less than $40.

me too...it is annoying to have the number show up.

I just ordered one! I did get one for a slightly bigger phone, forgot which one, and there is a way to shrink it by boiling the jelly case for 3 minutes or so, and it works but just not "good enough" for me but I'm OCD and like it to be perfect and made for the LG306g.

Is it possible to delete the extra Home screens on LG 305C? I would like to see only 1 Home screen to simplify the setup for my mom's phone.

Anonymous said...

I just activate my LG 305C phone. The tech support told me that it comes with 10 minutes free.

Also on Amazon. Both are coming soon end of Jan or first of Feb

They also have some on Amazon. Great phone, so glad cases are finally getting out there!

make sure you use the right "key" number when entering the info on the phone., I had to change router/modem and had to re enter the new modem key again to get my phone to connect.

i got this phone a few hours ago and i'm ready to throw it in the garbage. got it is a second phone for occasional use. every time i try to make a phone call the screen goes blank. all i have to do is hit the call button, as soon as it dials, black screen. it's not in a case or near my ear, nothing is covering the sensor as someone else suggested. then i tried to see if i could access instagram. i get a message in the browser that the screen is too large and then white. i can't get back to the original menu. as of right now the browser function is totally useless

What type of video files does this support????

Anonymous said...

Did you get a longer ring time before VM takes your call? If not, call customer service and have them change that for you. If they cannot, then change ringtones to something longer or louder so you can access your phone faster. I hope you got it though. It is a pain.

I bought my LG 306G from Walmart for $9.99 a couple weeks before Christmas. After checking often for a month, I finally found a hard case & a soft/jelly case on Amazon. The hard case arrived today (perfect fit) & the soft/jelly case will ship on Feb 1. I also bought a car charger & screen protector from Amazon. I really like this phone so far (upgrade from old Motorola flip phone), but I'm far from putting it thru any serious paces. I had no problems activating the phone, transferring my phone number & old minutes, & buying/adding new minutes on the Tracfone website. Thanks to everyone for sharing your experiences.

Can anyone tell me if this phone allows you to use other features while on a phone call? A good example I can think of is while talking on a phone call via speaker phone am I also able to access my web app during the call. If this is an option can someone please share how to access the icon screen while your on the phone call screen?

Trying to figure out how to transfer contacts via sim card from old LG840G (I don't have bluetooth) ... Can anyone PLEASE post step by step instructions?

Anonymous said...

Hey, for those interested, the price of this phone has dropped significantly at some point. At my local WalMart it went from $39.96 to $9.88, and it's about the same price on Amazon as well.

Sure, it's no smartphone, but for what it is it's quite the nice little device and would work out just fine for someone who's not currently interested in a smartphone or just doesn't have the money for a better one.

And functionally it works very similar to an Android device.

One key spec that's missing from above's description of the device is the fact that the display's screen resolution is 320x240. Sure, it's not a whole hell of a lot but how much do you really need for something like this. :)

I purchased the LG306G ($10) for a Central America trip using PicoSMS that supposedly would send text via wifi, but I could never get it to work. I assume it was because there was no service in the area even though I had wifi. Is there anyway to text using wifi when there is no service?

Anonymous said...

My text do not go through to certain contacts that I can call (LG306g) any ideas.

I am having the same problem. This is my second phone and it is no better. I wouldn't advise anyone to buy this phone.

Hurry, it's $4.99 postpaid on Amazon today! There is no extra cost if you merely want to use this beauty as a 911 emergency phone, as it is automatically enabled as such without even activating it. What else can you buy for $4.99 that has a free emergency phone, digital camera with auto focus, camcorder with auto focus, voice recorder, flashlight, touchscreen, clock, alarm clock, stopwatch, vibration alarm, built-in speaker, MP3 player, 1,000-entry phone book, calculator, calendar, light, rechargeable lithium battery, computer and AC connecting cords, video game player, voice command, and many other features? A mere 20 years ago, a slick gadget like this jewel would have easily cost $10,000-plus. NOTE: This is NOT a $1,000 smartphone, so please do not expect it to behave as such!

The LG306G has GPS but ONLY so emergency vehicles can locate you (by tracking your phone's GPS signal. It is NOT a Garmin, where you can map out your trip and follow the route to your destination all on your Tracfone. You need an expensive Smartphone for that. :)

The LG 306G was my first smart(ish) phone after using a flip phone for years. Like has been said previously, it's not a true smart phone and it doesn't use an android OS. Here's what drove me to abandon this phone after less than a month and go with a Moto E (which I LOVE):

Although you can enter a lock code, it won't lock automatically when it goes to sleep. You can only lock it by going into the setup menu and manually locking it. It will require your code upon rebooting, however, if you've set one up. If you have email accounts and saved passwords, then you best keep track of it.

The apps were pitifully inadequate. The browser shouldn't even be right called an internet browser as anything more than text causes a memory error. The email apps were usable but "clunky" (like everything else). Everything took more steps than it should have.

When the phone would ring, it was nearly impossible for me to dig this thing out of my pocket without accidentally answering it or bringing up some other app which I'd frantically try to close so I could answer the call.

When you get a text message, you can't see who the sender is until you open the message. What's that all about?

The MP3 player app chokes on larger music libraries. I put a 16G card in it, loaded it up with about 12GB of music, all mp3s with easy-to-digest constant bit rates of either 128 or 192kbps, with carefully filled out and cataloged ID3 tags. When I first installed this large library on the phone then hit the MP3 app, it sat and spun for a few minutes then gave up and rebooted. Did this over and over for about half a dozen times then finally read all the music library. After this initial fussiness, it will subsequently launch normally but, with the larger music library, it pauses and takes a long time when you change the list view, (like from artist to album or song). It also fails to correctly read all the ID3 tags giving me a large amount of music from "unknown" artists on "unknown" albums.

I finally got so fed up with it, I bought a Moto E which is light-years ahead of this abomination. I was also pleasantly surprised to discover much better Verizon coverage around where I live compared to the GSM phones I've used in the past.

Hate The LG306 Phone said...

This phone seldom if ever works for incoming calls. You can hit the green answer area softly or with all of your might repeatedly and it usually won't answer. So almost all of your calls go straight to VM and everyone thinks you are not answering on purpose. On the flip side, this phone will randomly call everyone on your contact list from your pocket or while sitting on its own, even when you have it on a different/non-call screen! There is also an annoying female voice that always repeats everything your phone does and you have to google the instructions to turn this off, which takes 2 separate actions, since the manual does not describe how. By far the worst phone on the market, if you actually want to receive phone calls to you, instead of having your phone randomly call your contacts throughout the day and at all hours of the day and night, on its own. If I could give a negative 5 stars for this horrible phone I would!!! Nightmarishly conceived and executed device that does not allow you to answer your own calls, but makes plenty of its own.

I found this phone too slippery to use, often hit the wrong key, on/off etc.
I found a nice Case, Cover on Ebay, Searched LG306g and went down the list. My case is like rubber with small squares on the body of the cover. Said made in China, but it shipped fast, 1 week, No Slip and it fits perfect, also has a built in stand and a clip option (belt clip) that I dont use.

I have had dropped calls, not sure if it was me hitting wrong buttons or will improve over time. This phone is Too Sensitive on the Screen and the buttons. This, IMO is its. major Flaw. Otherwise, I has many functions and I like it very well. Use it much as a Player for both music and Instructional Training audios. I paid $30 for it on Ebay in July, 2015. - LVGeorge

The only difficulty that I have with the LG306G phone is that when I play MP3 audio files through the earplug, the sound is barely audible. I have tried several different earplugs and I always have the same result (low volume. I have to set the volume level to 9 or 10 to hear it at moderate volume level). Without the earplug, the audio level is fine and I can listen to the file fine when the volume level is set at 5. Interestingly, when I play these audio files on my computer they sound just fine when I listen to them through an ear plug and I don't have to set the volume level to high. Any suggestions are welcome. Thank you.

I sure do have a comment. This phone advertises that it provides email capability. It does not. False advertising and extremely poor service. Since I got it for only $4.99 I'm not overly concerned that I paid for a piece of crap. However I plan to use up the minutes and then get a smartphone. If you want email access, this is definitely not the phone for you.

"Call Divert Set !" problem - When making calls, my LG306G always shows a popup "Call Divert Set !". But, it seems to make & receive calls normally. As I understand it, "Call Divert" is normally a "send all calls elsewhere (IE a land line)" option, or "send elsewhere after X rings" option. How do I "un-divert" or control this phone feature/option? There's no control for it that I can find.

This POS phone will not connect to my wi-fy. Won't pick up any reception in the home. Have to walk around Acre yard to get any reception. Multiple calls and letters sent to tracphone (hours) gone unresponded. Worst investment of our lives ... Bob Richardson/Delta OH

i can't even get a 3g signal so the phone can connect to start service, which i set up last night. and i have an lg 840g phone which supposedly has the same att carrier, and when the 840g has a signal, the 306g can't get over 3 bars. guess i'll have to call them again.
and i don't like how the on-off button is on the side of the phone- its too easy to press in by accident.

Would someone tell me why I cannot access Internet from Browser? Does the tracfone charge additional fee for Internet service? Thanks.

I've contacted Tracfone management and cust service and to no avail. Somehow they think it's OK to keep sending me all their marketing bs aps(of which I'm totally aware already) and waking people + depleting my battery. Any way to undue this ?

I will donate if you can help me figure which tracfone I need.....I want to only be able to make/receive calls...nothing else. If I can disable texting or internet, all the better.
Can you help me?

The LG 441G is a non-smartphone flip phone that may be what you are looking for. I would not go for a smartphone if you don't want to use texting/data/internet. Another option is the LG 237C is another option. Visit the Tracfone website, then shop for phones. After entering your ZIP code you should be able to see a list of phones available for your area. Hope that helps, and thanks for your support!

QUESTION: How do I update the airtime shown on the phone to the correct value shown at my tracfone account? I did this once before but can't find my notes and can't find it online either. I probably don't know what to call it!

Anonymous said...

I know this post is from two years ago, but you can turn on Bluetooth on both phones, and transfer your contacts and everything else directly from phone to phone. I did so from my older LG500G to my new LG306G

Hi,

Equipping for a weekend at a science fiction convention, I bought my 3 children 3x LG 306G + 3x 90day/60min cards at the local Mall-Wart.

Activating was a bit of an adventure (web site is very buggy!), but we eventually prevailed.

We had fun at the convention. Back home, the kids got used to having phone & text. 80 days passed.

One day, middle child reported that the phone no longer worked. Sure enough, it now has the words "Service Disabled" on the home screen, in the place where the other two say "123.45 Minutes / You Have 5 Service Days Left".

However, going to Prepaid -> My Airtime Info, the problem phone still shows minutes and days left. It also shows 3-4 bars and "3G" in the upper left corner.

So it has days, minutes, and reasonably good cell tower visibility. It just won't WORK!

Phone has been rebooted; battery taken out for a couple of minutes; SIM taken out and re-inserted.

I have not dared to swap SIMs between two of the phones (to see if the problem binds to the phone or the SIM).

===

Using one of the other phones, I dialed 611 and spent 40 minutes with a Tracfone CS rep. In the end she arranged to send a new SIM, claiming that the original SIM would not work because we were more than 10 miles from the location where the phone was first activated.

??WHAT!?!?! These things are supposed to work nationwide, if not worldwide! I had no idea I was buying a 10-mile anchor.

She had no useful explanation for that; nor why the other two phones don't have this problem; nor why all three of them worked just fine on a recent trip to Wisconsin (we're in California).

(Note: I had told her 30 miles. Looking now, Google Maps says it's only 17 miles from my house to the convention hotel. But yes, outside the 10-mile magic radius...)

All three look to AT&T towers, with 890141- SIM numbers. All were purchased at exactly the same time from the same shelf at the same Mall-Wart.

She verified that Tracfone's database reflected the right SIM number for the right phone number. When I asked her to re-enter the existing SIM number (as if I had just received it as the new replacement SIM) -- thinking that maybe it got corrupted somewhere else in their no doubt complicated data environment, and a refresh might fix it -- she balked. Didn't really understand my request, plus she said that the new SIM number data entry would be done by a different department, when it arrives.

Ok, so be it.

===

Any insights appreciated into:

- What the heck that "within 10 miles of original activation tower" nonsense is about
- Could the other two phones suddenly go wrong this way??

Thanks!

>Bela<

[addendum: first attempt to post on blogspot. I hit "Publish", it goes to "Preview", I hit "Publish", it authenticates with OpenID, then goes to "Preview" again! I've cycled through a few times, no indication that it's actually posted -- but maybe it's posted 5x?!? -- apparently not -- a test post responded "Your comment will be visible after approval.", these didn't. And I somehow slipstreamed from OpenID to Google, and I think that's why the test post got through. ]

Wheee.

New SIM arrived in the mail today.

Today was also each phone's last day.

Used tracfone.com to add 365day/400min (1200min) card to each phone; with the current $15 off coupon code of 89497. It allowed me to add the same code to each transaction (wasn't sure that would work).

Each phone received a message from Tracfone showing its added time.

Middle kid's phone started working. With the old SIM.

WTF.

Leaving the new SIM on the shelf for any future oddities...

I literally HATE this phone!!
1. I can't seem to keep the screen on for more than 30 seconds! I tried changing the time for the back light...didn't help one bit. 2. How in the heck do you shut the b*tch up?!? The one that tells me everything I do on the phone. There must be a setting but I sure can't find it. Anybody??
3. I'm constantly turning off the screen and when I turn it on I keep hitting the sound button on the other side.

I've spent hours trying to download APP from Google for my email....I gather from above that this is not possible....but I HATE going into "Browser", then choosing "Social & Email"; then inserting my email address (which is quite long); then inserting password -- and I finally get to my emails which I cannot READ due to tiny print. OMG...why did I ever turn in my Moto G android?? Well, the android was a lot more expensive -- but goes back to "ya don't get nothin for nothin'.

For cases try Big Lots, Freds and Dollar Generals. If you more then one of any of these stores and don't find it at one try another. My first case I went to 5 different Big Lots before I found one and Had the same experience With Freds when I was looking for a new one. My roommate had the same problem with Dollar General, so don't give up.

Lg306g is the same as the LG305C. Cases can be had at Amazon just be sure you're looking for these type of cases. The search function doesn't always steer that way

How can I move pics from this phone to my laptop? How do I activate Bluetooth? I know this phone is equipped with Bluetooth, I just can't find it

Use the USB cable of the charger. Plug it in the phone first then plug the USB end into the USB port on your laptop. It will ask "Connect as mass storage?" press OK.

Connected as mass storage mode.

Find it in the Computer drives list, locate the images and just drag and drop a copies to the laptop.

Select the Apps menu. scroll an press the Bluetooth Icon. Slide to O to the right to activate it.

I like this phone, BUT somehow I lost the ability to transfer pictures from the camera to my computer. That is the only reason I am looking for a new phone.

I've had this 306g for over 18 months. Simple to use, 3x minutes, decent camera.
Like a lot of phones, take off case-back to remove micro-SD card. Best deal I found was ebay $10 + $4 Silicone case (dots on back of case... nice and thick).
No problems here, but transfer of pix a bit tedious. IIRC Opera Mini 12 works in this phone... no guarantees.

I just retired mine in favor of a smart phone. This was a great basic phone----phone call and text. It connects to the net but the screen is so small it is almost unusable. It will connect to your wifi. I will miss the small size of this phone. I am now carrying a 5.5" ugh.

My phone gets stuck on a blank (dark) screen during a call. I tried a hard reset to no avail. Then I read somewhere that this can be due to a proximity sensor that is supposed to recognize when you hold your phone to your ear so that the phone will lock so that you won't accidentally press keys with your cheek when talking to other people on the phone. This wasn't a case with me as the phone was laying flat on the desk. This happens each & every time I make a call. Very annoying esp. when you call to activate your new credit card & unable to enter numbers.

I did run proximity test by holding my hand over the screen during a call. The screen turned black but comes back on once I remove my hand. This means that the proximity sensor is working. Now just to find a way around it, like shut it off. Any ideas are welcome

I bought from wal mart in 2014 for $50 !!~ Any one think i was screwed??? :-( :-) Pretty neat little phone (but I AM an OLD lady.,,)alas, I went on to bigger and better and learned the other wonders of cell phones, ESPECIALLY FREE ANDROIDS. I'm ready, again, to pick this little guy up... somewhere along the lines all of his innards were removed and lost (probably for the grand kids to "play cellphone"). Anyone know where I can get another battery and "sim?" card, or whatever it takes to get it up and running?

My carrier is Tracfone. I cannot seem to find a SIM card that works for mine. I have bought at least 3 and none of them work. I used this phone just 2 years ago, so I don't think it is broken. I used SIM card that are compatible with AT&T phones but it keeps telling me to insert the SIM card. I called Tracfone for assistance, but they don't seem to be able to help me, either. The SIM card I bought says it is compatible with most smartphones, so I thought it would work. HELP!

The lg306g is the worst phone ever. After 3 months of having it everything stopped working but the SMS and the calling feature and the lg306g I had before that one quit picking up a signal after 3 months. Naturally TracFone/SafeLink said nothing we can do you'll have to buy a new one. And beware of the Alcatel tcl lx smart phone in August and 2 days ago the sd card tray fell out, the back fell off which is not suppose to be removable and the screen shattered, and of course TracFone nor SafeLink will fix it or replace it. I've had to buy 4 phones this year. What kind of company doesn't replace even 1 of there defective phones after 10 yrs of service I'm leaving TracFone cuz in 10 yrs they've never replaced 1 of their defective products.

I have had a MOtorola EX431G. I have 'SafeLInk" service on it for free.
In the past when the phone was not working right I bought another EX431G and called SafeLInk to transfer the service to the new phone.
But I am thinking of transferring the service to the Tracfone LG306G.
In the past I accidentally ordered a Motorola EX431G that was from Tel-Cel rather than Tracfone and the service could not be transferred from Tracfone to a Tel=Cel even though the model of phone was the same.
But if the LG-306G is from Tracfone can the service be transferred from the EX431G (also from Tracfone) to the LG-306G ?

Another question, does the LG-306G have a sound recorder or voice recorder app or function and does it record in "AMR" or "3GPP"? (The EX431G phone records in AMR).
